The Western Digital My Book for Mac, comes loaded with backup software out of the box. Doubled with Time Machine this device put's my backup worries to rest. The WD My Passport Air USB 3.0 external hard drive for Mac offers great performance in a sturdy and compact design. It can write data to the disk at approximately 110 megabytes per second on my Macbook Pro Retina and read at about the same rate. I would recommend it to any Mac user, and that goes for the whole Western Digital family of backup machines. Western Digital's backup software was very easy to use, very OS-X like with its UI. Maybe the only downside is that this specific model I have only uses USB 2.0. I am used to my Firewire 800 speeds, but I was ready for USB 2.0 speeds when I purchased it. As we realized that more and more of our life was residing on the hard drives of our MacBooks, my wife and I tried various solutions. None of them worked very well at the start. Either they were a bit awkward, or didn't work consistently. So, when the MyBook for Mac went on sale, we bought two of the 1 TB models. One was immediately hooked up to our AirPort Extreme and shared. Within five minutes, we had backups via Time Machine occurring. The other drive is periodically synced to the primary drive, and kept off-site. The only real difference I can determine between the MyBook for Mac and other models is that is comes formatted with a Macintosh file system. If one were available for the right price, it is a trivial thing to change that. The MyBook for Mac fit the bill for a number of reasons. It was large enough to hold data for both of our laptops. The transfer rate was adequate for some experimentation with running virtual machines over the network. It's not an ultra-portable one, that can be thrown into a laptop back without a second thought. On my English Mac the folder location in Finder is: Macintosh HD:Users:RDB:Library:Application Support:Microsoft:Office:User Templates:My Templates Note in Excel 2011 in will make the folder 'My Templates' in your TemplatePath automatic the first time you save a file as template. How do I locate the Excel Templates folder or My Templates folder on a MAC running OSX Yosemite 10.10.5 and Excel version 2016? The path below that worked for the previous versions does not work for the new OS and Excel version. It gives you all the tools you need to create great-looking spreadsheets. You get a wide variety of templates to choose from. You can choose from finance, charts, invoice and business proposals. Next to File Format, click Excel Template (.xltx), or, if your template contains macros, click Excel Macro-Enabled Template (.xltm). Excel templates for mac. However, it is simple enough to move around that my off-site rotation works adequately well. Overall, the combination of the MyBook with the AirPort express has produced a quick backup solution for my home network. Had this product for over a year and it never worked great. Despite adjusting ports and cables it never stayed connected, which meant unplugging it and plugging it back in an esoteric method for it to come back up. I was willing to overlook that fault as long as it still worked. But recently it isn't recognized at all. It was my back up device, stayed on my desk, and just failed. Going to tinker with it to get some info back then trash it for an alternative external drive. Other gripes: The WD firmware software is frustrating and can't be removed, would clash with Time Machine; Power button never worked; Loud fan; Light was bright (finicky claim, i know). Likes: it had 2 firewire, 1 eSATA and 1 USB port; info share over firewire was speedy; provided hours of frustration:). I bought this on a whim as I needed to backup my Macbook Pro. I made a huge mistake when I decided to install the software that came with it and set up a password to be able to access it, thinking it would be ideal to keep it password protected. I didn't take into account that I couldn't use it with Time Machine until I actually unlocked the device via the software, which made it extremely inconvenient to just plug in and forget it. Removing the installed software and disabling the password lock on the drive was a whole different set of problems, which made me regret even purchasing this drive. ![]() By — Posted on February 14, 2017 - 1:58PM 2.14.17 - 1:58PM In this age of digital media, it’s incredibly important for creative professionals — especially photographers and videographers — to build backup solutions into their workflows. One bad hard drive or power surge can wipe out an entire project, and this is simply not an issue that anyone wants to deal with – especially if it’s a project for a client or campaign. Online cloud systems can be a great option for those with small or infrequent backup needs, but for anyone doing a lot of work, or needing to transfer large individual files, these offerings can be too slow and unreliable, and they may not address the potential security issues. What’s the option for creatives who transfer 4K video or RAW photo files?
