So this frame was available in a pretty interesting range of colorways and build kits during that short 3 yrs–including Project One models, US Postal team models, AND Discovery Team models. That was a transaction period for Trek–between the end of the US Postal Team and the beginning of the Discovery Channel Team. The OCLV120 frames from those three years are essetially IDENTICAL–except for the paint colors and graphics. Trek only made this particular style frame (with the little Cervelo-like aero hump on the back of the seat tube) for three seasons… 2004 / 2005 / 2006–which was part of Trek / Lance’s 7 straight year Tour de France winning streak. The frame has minimal but typical wear from normal riding. This particular bike has been well cared for and maintained.
2012 TREK 5200 OCLV CARBON 120 UPGRADE
This is a bike that you will never really needto upgrade from… unless you become a professional road racer… in which case, your team will provide you with a new bike every year. It’s honestly hard to find anything to dislike about a Trek Madone.

The Madones have always been VERY highly rated by their owners–and by the various bike magazine reviewers. They are racy enough to go really fast on… but comfortable enough for every day riding and training–and longer distances–depending on how you set them up. They made millions off Lance–and they plowed a LOT of that cash back into the business… and it showed. Thanks to Lance and the rest of Team US Postal Doping, Trek had a huge infusion of sales / cash in the late 90’s / early 00’s that allowed them to essentially leap ahead of their competition in terms of R&D and production. Why? Because they are simply one of the best all-around road bikes you can own. We buy (and sell) a LOT of TREK Madones here at Houston Bike Exchange. We replaced a cable or two… and some cable housings… and then fully re-tuned the bike.

The bar tape was a bit rough when the bike came in so we re-wrapped the bars with new (black) tape as well.Īside from that, the bike was in pretty cherry condition.
2012 TREK 5200 OCLV CARBON 120 INSTALL
The bike DID have a chain on it… but we prefer installing new chains whenever we install new cassettes… so, this bike has a new, ($35) KMX X.93 chain on it as well. So we put a brand new, ($65) Ultegra 12/23 on the Heliums before installing. Since bike came in without wheels, that means no cassette either. We bought this bike w/o wheels but we had a nice set of red anodized Mavid Heliums in the shop–with red Continental 4000 tires–just waiting for the right build to come along… and they should work nicely on this frame.
